Outside Reading
In order to encourage reading for pleasure, 10% of the grade for each quarter will be based on book talks given as accountability for outside reading. Honors students are required to read 400 pages each quarter in addition to the literature being studied as a class. AP students are required to read 600 pages each quarter in addition to the literature being studied as a class.
1. You may read any book that you haven’t read before (with the exception of a book several grades below your reading level).
2. If your English teacher questions your choice of a book, he or she may ask for a note from your parent or guardian.
3. You may get your book from any source—HPC media center, public library, your home, etc.
4. You must register your book with your English teacher at least one week prior to any book talk. Show your book to your teacher so that he or she can approve and record it. You may not do a book talk on any book that has not been registered with Mrs. Kratzer.
5. Book talks are done on page amounts of 25 or more. Books with pictures will count less.
6. You may take notes while you read and have those with you during the book talk.
7. You must have the book with you to do a book talk.
8. Collections of short stories are permissible, but you may not count magazine or newspaper articles toward your page requirement.
9. You may not use a book assigned by another teacher. (Exception: AP students may use books recommended or assigned by Mr. Johnson).
10. You must have your book with you every day in every class.
